Jack the Giant Killer
Jack the Giant Killer was todays film of choice. It was between GI Joe (I really should see the first one first), Jack and the Croods (which just doesn’t really appeal to me right now *shrugs*) so it wasn’t all that hard of a desision.
So first off I’ll state that I did enjoy Jack. I liked the plot and the characters were pretty brilliant at times. It is definitely worth going to see if you haven’t aleady seen and there isn’t anthing that appeals to you more.
I do just have a few small critisisms about it.
1. It’s timing sucked. Big time. I would have been a lot more impressed with it, I think, if I hadn’t already seen Hansel and Gretal and Oz this month. Those were the ‘Big 3’ for me this month and I’m sorry to say but Jack just didn’t live up the standard set by the other two. I’m sorry but it true.
2. It was a 12A - It feels like they…I dunno…took something away from it. Like the blood. Now I’m not a huge fan of blood, guts and gore, but I will admit that if someone gets stabbed, I would like to see a wee bit of blood on the sword/dagger/whatever. And give them their due, they did show blood sometimes but at others, for example when Ewan MacGregors hand is getting poked with the dagger, shouldn’t we at least get to see a scratch instead of smooth unmarred skin. I’m just saying, bump the rating up to a 15, add a bit more blood and it miht have been a wee bitty more exciting.
3. The magic giant controling crown is actually the British crown jewels. Seriously! WTF?!?!?!?!?! No impressed with the fanasy to real world ending. Not one bit. Wasn’t impressed when th BBC did it at the end of Merlin and sure as hell am not impressed now! Feel like I aught to have made this point one!
4. A few very small ‘What the hells?!’. The main one that springs to mind (and there were a couple more but I can’t really be bothered with them that much) is when the Giants finally get the drawbridge down, the portcullus is only then closed. Surely it should have been closed from the start right? Just a thought. Maybe they weren’t as keen on keeping the giants out as they wantd us to believe.
Ok thats me done. Overall thoughts are that though it is lacking in some areas it was stil an enjoyable film. It just didn’t quite live up to Hansel and Gretal or Oz.
